Donating from the Bounty in Your Backyard
Recently we wrote about those that have a backyard you're not cultivating, asking you to consider sharing your backyard with someone who has a green thumb but no where to plant.
What about those of you who are growing fruits and vegetables on your land, but are unable to use everything you grow?
In California, the Gifts from Our Gardens program is a lets homeowners donate their excess fruits and veggies to a food assistance program, receiving a tax deduction in return.
Even if your own community has no such official program, local food pantries and soup kitchens would probably love some fresh donations, so ask if your excess figs or those annoying mulberries (which are actually edible) can be put to better use than fertilizing your yard.
