Urge local businesses to stop selling bottled water
Being a conscious consumer starts with making good decisions about how you use your purchasing power, but don't let it stop there! Write a letter to your local restaurant or store saying that you plan to put your money where your values are. Business owners should know that by removing the bottled water from their shelves they stand to gain a loyal--and vocal--customer. Use the templates below to start your letter to a manager at a local business.

I am a loyal patron of (store) and would like to share my deep concern about your sale of bottled water. I very much understand that selling single-serve bottled water brings profit to your business. However, there are other ways that you can bring profit to your business without promoting a product that is detrimental to the environment. For example, selling nontoxic reusable bottles printed with (your store’s) logo would not only be profitable but would advertise (your store) everywhere its buyers take it. Additionally, by taking the stand to stop selling single-serve bottled water, you can approach local media to state that you are taking a firm environmental stand as a store. Center for a New American Dream, an organization I support that is leading a national campaign for individuals and institutions to Break the Bottled Water Habit, can assist you in tailoring a message to local media such as (newspaper) and (tv news team). You can reach their outreach department by email at hanaa@newdream.org or by calling 301.891.3683. Press around this issue can only help business! Warmly, |

I am a Co-Op member and would like to share my deep concern about your sale of bottled water. I very much understand that selling single-serve bottled water brings profit to the Co-Op. However, I joined this Co-Op because of its values in supporting eco-friendly and socially just farmers and companies. I believe that there are more environmentally conscious ways to bring profit to the Co-Op, and that this is an issue the Co-Op Board should reconsider. Additionally, by taking the stand to stop selling single-serve bottled water, you can approach local media to state that you are renewing your environmental stand as a Co-Op. However, there are other ways that you can bring profit to your business without promoting a product that is detrimental to the environment. For example, instead of selling bottled of carbonated water that you buy from an outside vendor, you can bottle your own with the use of machines such as the Soda Club (sodaclubusa.com), as many other restaurants have been doing...imagine reducing both your costs and waste!
