Turn the Tide in Brief
 Turn the Tide is a program of nine simple actions each of us can take to have a measurable, positive impact on the environment - and it shows us this impact right away. Everyone knows ordinary people can make personal changes to help the environment; Turn the Tide explains what we can do and demonstrates how it will make a difference. The Center for a New American Dream asked leading scientists and experts in the field of conservation what first steps they would ask Americans to take to reduce global warming, conserve water and energy, and save wildlife and forest habitats.
From their list of suggestions, we chose:
- actions that matter most and can be measured accurately, in order to demonstrate our impact with integrity;
- actions that are realistically achievable for most people, in order to have broad, meaningful appeal;
- just nine actions, for a clear and manageable program.
When these nine basic actions are taken together by thousands of us, it has a significant impact on our environment. When these actions are reported and the cumulative impact is publicized, increasing numbers of Americans will be inspired to drop in and make waves!
What We Do Matters
Turn the Tide's powerful web interface allows participants to quickly and easily see what the nine actions are, why they are important, and how to complete them. When you return to the site to report your completed actions, Turn the Tide's environmental calculators will immediately compute and display the impact of your efforts. You will also see the combined impact of everyone participating in the Turn the Tide program.
For every thousand participants, each year we save 48 million gallons of water, 170 trees, 12,250 pounds of sea life, and prevent the emission of 4 million pounds of climate-warming carbon dioxide. This demonstrates that together we can have an even greater positive impact on the earth. Through the web interface we see that we are not alone. Together, we build a tally that both motivates others to take action in their lives and adds up to quite a difference for the Earth.
What Turn the Tide is Not
1. Turn the Tide is NOT 1,001 things for you to do.
It's not 50 things to save the earth. Instead, we've selected nine powerful actions with proven, quantifiable results. Almost everyone can complete them in their daily lives.
2. Turn the Tide is NOT a guide for knitting sweaters out of old mop heads.
Almost everyone can take these nine actions within the constraints of their busy schedules. Sure, some require a bit of planning to pull off, but none are overwhelming. You may even find an increase in quality of life and a savings to your pocketbook.
3. Turn the Tide is NOT the complete answer to all of our environmental problems.
We will be able to hand a healthy planet over to future generations only if government, businesses and institutions also each do their part. Turn the Tide is an important part of the solution. It offers a way for each of us to personally engage and affect change in the world around us. It offers a way for us to be environmental role models in our families and our communities. And, through concrete example, it challenges business leaders and elected officials to make the right decisions as well.
