Buy renewable energy for your home now
Sign up for renewable energy online and make sure your electricity bill doesn’t include the cost of warming the planet! The links below will help you switch instantly to a renewable energy provider in your area, or buy certificates to buy renewable energy elsewhere in the country to offset your carbon dioxide emissions.
Here’s how it works:

From RECs to reforestation projects, Carbonfund.org is there to help you support only the highest quality certified and third-party verified projects. |
| Green-e | Online search form to identify certified renewable energy options available for your home. Depending on what's available, you can switch to clean energy online through a direct provider or through the purchase of “Tradable Renewable Certificates” that offset your non-renewable energy use. |
| Green Power Locator | Department of Energy site for finding out which renewable energy options are available in your state. |
| Green Tags | Calculate your personal carbon dioxide emissions and buy green tags to offset your non-renewable energy use. (No links to local providers on this site.) When you click on the link, you’ll find a brief explanation of what green tags are all about. At the bottom of the page is a link buy the tags online. |
Why it’s important
Currently, our electricity is produced almost entirely from coal, non-renewable fossil fuels and nuclear power. Electricity generation is the most polluting of U.S. industries. It is responsible for about one-third of the nation’s carbon dioxide, the main contributor to global warming, as well as around 30 percent of the smog inducing nitrogen oxides, and about two-thirds of the nation’s sulfur dioxide, the main cause of acid rain and of fine particulate matter implicated in tens of thousands of deaths in the United States each year.
Choosing renewable energy means you are contributing to the solution instead of the problem. Depending on where you live, you can either switch directly to a local renewable energy supplier, or accomplish the equivalent through “green tags.” Green tags (or “renewable energy certificates”) allow you to offset your energy use by paying the difference to switch to green energy elsewhere in the grid--the network that supplies energy to consumers throughout the nation.
Green tags may seem confusing at first, but the concept is simple. With green tags, the renewable energy you purchase doesn’t usually flow directly into your home, but the net environmental benefit is the same: buying them pays for the difference to replace polluting energy sources such as coal, nuclear, oil or gas with renewables such as wind or solar. You can choose to offset your entire energy use, or a percentage of your total use.
