A quiet evening with family and friends. Or a raucous one. An afternoon of gardening (again, you choose the volume).
A few hours devoted to your favorite hobby, or helping out in your community.
More of what matters means having more time for the things that really matter to YOU. If you find it increasingly difficult to “find the time,” you are not alone. Did you know that Americans put in longer hours on the job than we did 50 years ago? That U.S. workers average fewer vacation days than their counterparts in all other industrial nations?
Keeping the work and spend treadmill going has become the single-minded obsession of the American economy, while other values -- strong families and communities, good health and a clean environment, active citizenship and economic justice, time for nature and the soul -- are increasingly neglected. Useful and creative work can be vital to happiness, but millions of Americans are feeling overworked, over-scheduled and just plain stressed out.
If you are trying to live consciously, buy wisely, and make a difference, time is important. When you take back your time it not only benefits you, it benefits others. Studies demonstrate that overworked people tend to consume and waste more, while people who have more time drive less, cook more, choose less throw away stuff, devote more time to community service and civic participation.
At New Dream, we offer resources that help people slow down, find balance, do good things. Check out our tips for simplifying the holidays, raising healthy kids in a commercial culture or just learning how to have more fun with less stuff
Because sometimes time isn’t of the essence, it is the essence.
Want More?
New American Dream is promoting our message of hope through a new series of posters, postcards, and ads that illustrate how living consciously, buying wisely, and making a difference isn’t about having less, but of cultivating more of the things that matter: more nature, more time, more fun, and more fairness, to name a few. Now we need your help spreading the word.
Print our “More Time” poster and hang it at your favorite hangout, like the local coffee shop, bookstore, or co-op.
