Why It's Important
The health of both our communities and ecosystems is affected by what we eat and drink. When buying products such as tea, considering the social and environmental facets of the production process can lead to consumption patterns more responsible in their fostering of both interpersonal and ecological stewardship.
Around the world, agricultural workers are subjected to unsafe working conditions and wages far below a livable standard. Fair Trade products guarantee livable wages for workers, and thus improve their access to health care, 
housing, and educational resources. This is especially important in the many countries where domestic laws providing for decent wages and working standards are not always enforced. Indeed, Fair Trade contributes to the empowerment of working people and the fostering of a global community.
Chemical applications including pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides were developed to produce high crop yields, reduce the cost and labor of farming, and produce visually appealing (unblemished) produce. However, considerable scientific evidence suggests that chemical use is extremely dangerous. Resistance quickly evolves in the targeted species, necessitating ever-greater toxic 'solutions' for pest control. "Integrated Pest Management" and organic farming practices foster restoration of ecosystem health and offer respite from reliance on toxic chemicals.
