Cleaning Projects: Family/Living Room
Time to spend: 15 minutes
Windows:
You can make your house look and feel cleaner by opening the windows. This is a great way to remove toxins from the house and let the sunlight in. As for cleaning windows, use an old newspaper to clean. It works better than other cloths and it is a great way to recycle.
Time to spend: 30 minutes
Dust:
Combine 10 drops lemon oil, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, and a few drops olive oil or jojoba in spray bottle or reusable container. Use solution and old t-shirt to wipe down cabinets, tables, and all other surfaces.
Floors: Use a white vinegar and lemon juice solution to mop floors and remove dirt from wood surfaces. Concentrate on the areas around doorways, which harbor tracked-in dirt. If you have carpet, sprinkle dry cornstarch or baking soda on your carpet and repeatedly blot stains with a mixture of vinegar and soapy water.
Time to spend: One Hour
Furniture Polish: Combine 1/4 cup vinegar plus a few drops of oil to make a wood cleaner and polish. According to Care 2 webpage, the vinegar pulls the dirt out of the wood, and the few drops of oil lubricates the wood so that it doesn't dry out. The best oils to use are those that have the longest shelf life. Olive oil works well, but the best choice of all is the liquid wax jojoba, because it never goes ranced.
Polish Metal Surfaces: For polishing other metal surfaces there are a variety of methods you can use.
- Brass: Worcestershire sauce;
- Chrome: Apple Cider Vinegar or baking soda ;
- Copper: Vinegar and Salt or Lemon and Salt;
- Pewter: Cabbage Leaves;
- Silver: Soak in a solution of one quart warm water with 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon salt and a piece of aluminum foil; or soak in milk over night
Erase the dirt from the walls. A school-eraser works well for getting stains off walls.
Work on Stains: Make a paste of washing soda and water; and club soda, lemon juice and hot water.
