Cleaning Projects: Bathroom
Time to spend: 15 minutes
Sink: Mix 1 quart of warm water, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice/or vinegar and use cloth to wipe out sink. The sink is the room’s focal point, so starting with the sink will make the bathroom look cleaner.
Speed-sanitize: Use the same mixture as used for sink to clean the edge of the bathtub, the toilet seat, and the toilet exterior, and all other surfaces.
Mirrors: Use old newspaper to clean mirrors.
Time to spend: half a day
Deep-clean the toilet: Use a baking soda and vinegar paste. Let solution sit for two hours in toilet, and then scrub. If your bowl is porcelain, try rubbing a natural pumice stone (available at most hardware stores) on lime, rust, and hard-water stains. Keep the stone very moist throughout the process and it shouldn’t scratch.
Scrub down the shower and the tub: Use baking soda and vinegar paste to get rid of mildew. Scrub from the top down so the tub floor gets the full benefit of a soaking to dissolve buildup.
Ceilings and Walls: Put 50/50 hydrogen peroxide and water solution on the ceilings and walls.
Remove mildew, mold, and other stubborn bits. To dislodge mildew and mold, apply hydrogen peroxide straight from the bottle and wear rubber gloves to protect your hands. Let it soak in for five minutes, then scrub with a grout brush. According to Care 2, the EPA recommends simple soap to use as a disinfectant. Yet, there are many essential oils, such as lavender, clove, and tea tree oil (an excellent natural fungicide), that are very antiseptic, as is grapefruit seed extract, even though they aren’t registered as such. Use one teaspoon of essential oil to 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. A grapefruit seed extract spray can be made by adding 20 drops of extract to a quart of water.
