WIC: Bringing Local Foods to WIC Customers in Los Angeles
The Ethicurean reports on a new WIC Local Foods Line which launched in Los Angeles County. Like other government subsidy programs, WIC, (the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) supplements the diets of low-income women, infants and children at the expense of some challenges. See their overview of why California's WIC authorized foods don't include things like milk, cheese, eggs, and grains.
That the program brings about 5 or 6 pixie tangerines from a local farmer to a WIC recipient is indeed progress. One need only look at the increasing number of farmers who accept EBT (food stamps) at farmers' markets.
