WETA Radio, The Intersection, July 25, 2006 - The Hybrid Question with our Communications Director Sarah Roberts. Click to listen...

Question A couple of questions on the show stumped our Sarah. Click here to see the answers...

Question: What's the lifecycle of a hybrid battery? How long do they last? Are they recyclable?
The hybrid battery is designed to last the life of the vehicle, hybrid battery packs are just about as efficient as they come. www.hybridcars.com tells us that the batteries are also made out of nickel metal hydride, or NiMH, which is earth-friendlier than rechargable nickel cadmium. More information about hybrid batteries can be found here.

Question: What's the total cycle impact of hybrids?
Hybrids are produced much like other cars. They are still produced with materials like aluminum and steel. Hybridcars.com takes a look at the cycle impact of cars. Having spent two years collecting data on the issue, CNW Marketing Research Inc.did a "Dust to Dust" Automotive Energy report that looks at the lifetime energy usage for each class of vehicle.
