The Workplace Programs focus on solutions and approaches where people work.  The main program within this area is the Responsible Purchasing Network (RPN), which helps institutional purchasers incorporate social and environmental considerations into procurement. Institutional purchasers, including federal agencies, state and local governments, colleges and universities, and large companies, represent tremendous purchasing power. RPN’s mission is to harness that power and shift purchases toward socially and environmentally responsible products, thereby changing the way businesses and institutions buy and creating more opportunities faster for the average consumer.

Workplace Programs Director
The Workplace Programs Director reports to New American Dream’s Executive Director and works with a team of staff, consultants, fellows, and external advisors to promote socially and environmentally superior products to RPN members, clients, and other partners. RPN conducts strategic programs to support specific responsible purchasing efforts with key buyers. Ongoing projects promote green cleaning products, energy efficient office equipment, EPEAT certified computers, efficient light bulbs, environmentally friendly food services and drinking water, renewable energy, clean vehicles, environmentally preferable paper and other sustainable goods and services.

Primary Job Duties
As Workplace Programs Director you will direct a program to increase, improve, and accelerate institutional procurement of environmentally sustainable products and services as well as develop and educate formal and informal networks of workplace activists. Specific responsibilities will include:

  1. Staff Supervision and Administration: Hire and manage staff, develop and manage budgets, and oversee grants.
  2. Strategic Planning: Develop one and three year plans for the workplace programs
  3. Program Development:  Continually search for new opportunities for program expansion and enhancement
  4. Clearinghouse: Maintain and improve web-based responsible purchasing resource center
  5. Membership Program: Increase RPN’s reach by recruiting and maintaining members, managing an awards program, producing webinars and events, conducting a member survey and publishing a member report
  6. Partnerships: Create and maintain partnerships and collaboration with allies that advance responsible purchasing, reduce redundancy in the movement, earn income or reduce costs for RPN, and expand our presence in the movement
  7. Steering Committee: Regularly convene and consult with a core group of responsible purchasing leaders to help guide our work
  8. Marketing: Develop materials to explain and market RPN to a wide audience of purchasers
  9. Fundraising: Work with fundraising staff to identify grant opportunities, write proposals, track and report progress to funders, and conduct or oversee grant-funded projects
  10. Consulting: Identify consulting opportunities, contract consulting jobs, and conduct or oversee consulting projects
  11. Public Speaking: Speak at events to advance our work and increase our visibility
  12. Research & Writing: Research, write and edit RPN publications, including Responsible Purchasing Update, Responsible Purchasing Announcements, Responsible Purchasing Guides, press releases, and other pieces as needed.
  13. New Dream Coordination: Coordinate with other Center for a New American Dream departments and teams as needed, e.g. Outreach, Marketplace, Communications

The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s or equivalent experience preferred); minimum five years experience with an emphasis on managing environmental outreach programs; a grounding in environmental science; excellent research, writing, and verbal skills; quantitative skills; flexibility; the ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously; and the ability to work well both individually and as part of a team.

Job Duties
Primary duties include coordinating and maintaining consumer programs and campaigns relating to individual actions within the home and collective action in communities. The Program Coordinator reports to the Home and Communities Director. S/he works with a variety of staff teams, consultants, fellows, interns, and external partners in order to promote socially and environmentally superior outcomes.

1) Home Projects

  1. Develop and maintain relationships with allies and partner groups in creating and delivering messages and educational materials
  2. Work with a variety of media and social networking vehicles to reach the public
  3. Present publicly on areas of expertise on an occasional basis
  4. Supervise and assist interns as needed.

2) Community Projects

  1. Work with community groups to develop and document pilot efforts so they can be replicated elsewhere
  2. Facilitate communication and sharing between community-based groups to “wholesale” our methods and messages

Opportunities exist to:

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent experience.
  2. Minimum two years experience in environmental issues and/or program management
  3. Familiarity with and commitment to New American Dream mission and values
  4. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, and working knowledge of online media
  5. Ability to deal professionally and appropriately with members and donors, and to maintain confidentiality.
  6. Quantitative skills – must be proficient with Excel
  7. The ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously
  8. Excellent written and oral communication skills
  9. Ability to work independently and with teams
  10. Ability to innovate efficient internal administrative and operational processes
  11. Experience working with stakeholder groups, partners, coalitions

Position: Communications Internship

Interns will work with our Communications Team in support of New Dream’s efforts with media outreach, marketing, and assisting with a variety of other communications efforts.  
Responsibilities include:

  •  Directly participating in blogging, vlogging, press releases, public events, and other media efforts;
  • Conducting research in support of media efforts;
  • Tracking media results and outreach results;
  • Maintaining New Dream’s Media calendar and Press Binder
  • Being comfortable with our motto: “more fun, less stuff”; and
  • Providing administrative assistance. 
    The ideal candidate is: eager to learn more about communications and marketing, highly organized, has excellent writing and verbal communications skills, and has some organizing experience. Experience with and curiosity about emerging electronic and Web 2.0 approaches is strongly desired.  He or she is able to juggle, loves our mission, is internet-literate, and is a quick learner.

Summer Development Internship

Schedule:  20 hours a week, dates and times to be determined. This is a summer position starting as soon as possible and going through August. There is a possibility this position could be extended if mutually agreeable.

Supervisor: Development Manager, Alexis Blackman

Description:  The development internship offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to work closely with accomplished fundraising professionals in a national environmental non-profit with an annual budget of $2 million. The development intern's responsibilities include:

  • Corresponding with individual and institutional donors, including writing and sending thank you letters;
  • Identifying potential funders by conducting research on foundations and major donors;
  • Drafting development materials;
  • Working closely with Earth Share, a leading environmental umbrella organization, in expanding New Dream's fundraising activities;
  • Helping with general administrative work (approximately 25% of time) and other tasks as requested.

While this is a development internship, the position is flexible and offers the possibility of working with Communications and Outreach departments on specific projects.  Interns are invited to attend and help plan staff meetings and may be asked to represent New Dream at community events.
The ideal candidate will be a good writer who is independent, detail-oriented, and capable of taking initiative on specific projects. Successful applicants will also have a sense of humor and subscribe to our philosophy of "more fun, less stuff." Applicants who are looking to learn about fundraising and outreach techniques in the non-profit world are encouraged to apply. Experience working with databases a plus, but not required.
